The Heavy Feathers are a 4 piece rock and blues covers band based in Oamaru. They have been playing together for around a year now and are very popular among the Waitaki locals. With a huge range of music ranging from the 1950’s through to the top 40, there will always be something to kick your heels up to!
Krissy McGeown is the lead vocalist, who has had around 20 years’ experience singing in bands, from rock to country to 1940’s style close harmony. She is also often involved in a lot of musical theatre shows, her most recent being the Musical Theatre Oamaru production of “The Addams Family” in which she played Alice Beineke, and received an OSTA best supporting actress nomination for the role.
Hayden Wylie is the guitarist, who started to play the drums, then taught himself to play guitar in the mid 90’s. He played in a couple of bands with friends from school.
He was a member of the popular Oamaru band “The Pohas” which had some excellent musicians in it, including our very own Tony!
Craig French has played the bass guitar for 18 years, since the start of High School. Having been in a handful of originals bands, this is Craig’s first time in a covers band. “It’s nice to be able to put your own spin on some classics you grew up with….”
Notable influences of Craig’s include Victor Wooten and “The greatest Bass player in the world”- Jaco Pastorius.
If Craig isn’t playing Bass he is baking bread and annoying his kids.
Tony McDermott is the drummer, who started drumming in the Dunedin City Grade one pipe band, playing snare and tenor. He graduated from this to playing bass drum, allowing him to play the largest Bass drum in the South Island!
Since then he has been in many bands, ranging from Indi, Goth, originals, acoustic covers, electric covers…. You name it! He was notable in the Oamaru covers band “The Pohas” with Hayden, and now is kept very busy as a sought after drum teacher, which he has been doing for the last 3 years.
